Program Implementation

In 2024 our third cohort joined Juntos, bring our continuing enrollment to 18. The family series of workshops was provided for incoming families. First and second year cohorts attended the 2024 WSU Summer Teen Conference and were encouraged to act in leadership roles leading activities. The afterschool group participate in cultural activities and success coaching with the coordinator.

Community Integration

We introduced the Juntos program internally to other local 4-H clubs and also have done some volunteer activities with community organizations. Some of the high school youths have been participating in Club de Lectura, which is an after-school program where they read to younger kids in Spanish. We are looking to collaborate with other outside organization like Vamos Outdoors. Teens have taken multiple field trips related of work-force development and post-secondary education.

Technology Integration

Teens were encouraged to create and deliver PowerPoint demonstrations. Discussions with the school were focused on identifying technology needs for implementing video-conference based mentoring opportunities. Additional grant funding focused on STEM careers is being introduced into the program.

Sustaining

We attempted (unsuccessfully) to get a van donated to the University to help youth from this remote location access tutoring and internship opportunities. The coordinator has reached out and established partnerships with a number of organizations including the local library, extracurricular biking and outdoor clubs and has initiated a partnership with Whatcom Community College to identify and supply academic mentors for Juntos members. We have applied for some sustainability funding from a local bank. An additional STEM grant "Youth Experiences in Agriculture" is providing additional funding for the Juntos program.
