Market Statement

Program Implementation

During this time, we saw the launch of Phoenix site, with the hiring of a locally based coordinator and the hosting of an inaugural market event on Nov 2, 2024. The school site (V. H. Lassen Academy of Science and Nutrition) that we had been planning to work with in Phoenix announced its closure, so we also pivoted and identified a new host location (South Mountain High School) and built a relationship with them. The Phoenix site worked to understand how to best connect with youth in South Phoenix to recruit FARMacy Facilitators and held a parent info night on Nov 21, 2024. We have been ironing out initial kinks in program expansion, and the multi-site team continues to meet monthly via Zoom; these meetings include partners and the evaluation team as well. In terms of initiating the FARMacy Facilitator program, we brought 5 Maricopa 4-H Healthy Living Ambassadors to Tucson to participate in the KALE conference in November. We also worked to develop the youth evaluation tools. Since we haven’t yet commenced the FARMacy Facilitator programming, we do not yet have results to report.

Community Integration

In Maricopa County, we have been working to build relationships with local institutions, including schools and a Boys & Girls Club. We previously identified V.H. Lassen Academy of Science and Nutrition as our partner in the FARMacy project, but this year they announced their closure, so we had to invest time in identifying a new community partner. Time this year was spent doing outreach and trying to establish a new partner site. We did succeed in identifying one - The Academies at South Mountain, a public high school in Phoenix Unified School District. We also are continuing to strengthen ties and resolve some initial challenges with our produce-delivery partner and work to identify local partners who want to take any remaining produce at the end of the event. We also continue to explore ways to work with the UA Culinary Medicine program.

Technology Integration

We’ve used technology at our events to capture evaluation data and encourage engagement in additional programming. QR codes were provided for individuals interested in completing our stakeholder survey on their phone. To foster greater collaboration, particularly across our two communities in the Phoenix and Tucson areas, we also hold monthly Zoom meetings with our full team to plan upcoming events and share resources.

Sustaining

We are excited to be launching the Healthy Living Ambassador program in Maricopa County, and with the guidance of our colleagues on Tucson we hope this will be a long-running feature of local 4-H programming. We are proud of our resilience and ability to pivot when faced with local school closures, and look forward to deepening Cooperative Extension’s connections with youth and families in these communities.
