Program Implementation

In 2024, three team members (Dan Weigel, Hayley Maio, and YaeBin Kim) developed the program curriculum (still finializing) and our CYFAR program (Everday SEL and You) was pilot-tested and implemented to support the social-emotional development of children and families in low-income, predominantly Hispanic communities (only in Las Vegas this year). The program consisted of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Family Engagement classes offered in-person over seven weeks. These sessions introduced parents and caregivers to key SEL concepts, including self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, social awareness, and relationship skills. Families engaged in interactive activities, discussions, and hands-on practice to reinforce these skills at home. Throughout implementation, we gathered feedback from participants to refine and improve the program. Many parents reported gaining a deeper understanding of SEL and applying the strategies in their daily interactions with their children. Weekly Lessons 1. Learning About Feelings and Emotions 2. Developing a “Can-Do” Mindset 3. Practicing Self-Control and Mindfulness 4. Becoming a Problem Solver 5. Understanding How Others Think and Feel 6. Effective Communication 7. Respecting and Embracing Others Since we recently pilot-tested the program, we do not have results to report yet. However, we gathered feedback from parents to identify areas for improvement and make necessary adjustments. Their comments provided valuable insights into the program’s effectiveness and helped refine our approach to better meet the needs of families.

Community Integration

The program was pilot-tested, reaching vulnerable families through 3 community sites in our targeted communities(local libraries). 21 adults (1 male, 20 female). 21 children (10 male, 11 female)

Technology Integration

As part of our project plan, we have successfully integrated technology into our CYFAR program to enhance accessibility and engagement. All staff have access to email and the internet and have received training on CYFAR resources. Our instructor has incorporated PowerPoint presentations, digital resources, and a digital camera into lesson plans to support interactive and visually engaging learning experiences. These technological enhancements have improved program delivery, allowing for more dynamic instruction and better access to materials for both staff and participants.

Sustaining

Progress on sustainability has occurred primarily through collaborations with our community partners and in discussions with our coach. We have had initial discussions with our Extension director and other administration about continued or additional Extension funding in the future
