Program Implementation
The pilot program focused on relationships building between Moorhead Public Schools, the local community partner AADA, and MN 4-H staff. Together, we developed a pilot program titled Build Your Future for middle school youth. The topics centered on science inquiry and careers. MN 4-H provides curriculum. AADA provided facilitators that matched the target audience and could build culturally relevant environment. Moorhead Public Schools provided the location and registration system. The program was delivered 5 Wednesdays in April and May 2024. Total of 12 youth enrolled. Although the pilot program was successful, barriers to repetition appeared. Staffing at AADA changed and therefore facilitators were not available for Fall programs. Families were not happy with the appearance that their children stayed “in school” longer than usual. They were not making a distinction between school time and after school time activities. Families expressed a preference for a community based location that was not the school system. In the fall of 2024, MN 4-H began to reach out to the alternative high school program and the career academy program in Moorhead Public Schools to explore options there. RESULTS As a result of transitions with our local partners and our programs’ commitment to working with community members on the programs, our building year stretched into the fall. With program sites just beginning in March and December 2024, we’ve had limited opportunities to collect data towards our stated outcomes. Our programs have now begun and we are collecting participation data, CYFAR common measures, and integrating data collection on our outcomes into the program planning process.Community Integration
Our cultural partners and community liaisons had a deep involvement with the development of the partnership and programming. We deliberately used facilitators that spoke languages native to the youth participating in the program.Technology Integration
Moorhead Public Schools uses a one to one device platform with its students in middle and high schools. Participants are able to use their school provided device for aspects of the after school program.Sustaining
The relationship with AADA and KaJoog met with difficulties and was paused. In response, MN 4-H actively recruited new program partner agencies to replace AADA and Ka Joog as lead consultants, facilitators and 4-H program leaders.. MN 4-H partnered with a well known community organization, Cultural Diversity Resources (CDR), to put on a “Start a 4-H Club” workshop. CDR serves as a support organization for immigrants and various immigrant serving organizations in the Fargo-Moorhead area. Five immigrant serving organizations attended the initial workshop. Two organizations moved forward in partnership with MN 4-H to begin coordinating 4-H programs in Moorhead. CDR is adept at writing and managing grants. They will continue to serve in a supportive and sustainability role for new 4-H clubs in Moorhead. They will assist with securing future funding and best business practices.Form A - Age Group by Ethnicity and Race
