Program Implementation
The New Hope 4-H program, established in 2021 with the support of two volunteers and two 4-H staff members, has been dedicated to providing bi-weekly STEM programming. In January of 2024, the team established three primary program goals: 1) Broadening the 4-H club’s reach, 2) Engaging in a community service project, and 3) Enhancing volunteer leadership roles that are supported by 4-H staff. Throughout 2024, the club executed a service project that amplified youth voices, collaborating with volunteers and community partners to create household kits for new immigrants. Regular meetings were held at the New Hope for Immigrants facility, in partnership with the local New Hope for Immigrants organization, to support new immigrants in the community. In October, we conducted a program planning meeting to incorporate youth voices for the upcoming year. Monthly programming, supported by the CYFAR grant, focused on culturally appropriate educational opportunities for the Somali community in western Polk County, MN. The group met thirteen times in 2024, ensuring ongoing support and youth development.Community Integration
The New Hope 4-H program has made significant strides in integrating the community, particularly by supporting new immigrants. Through the “Immigrant Help Mate” project, funded by the Minnesota 4-H Helping Hands grant, young people have actively contributed to easing the transition for new immigrants. Youth assembled home safety kits containing essential items like fire extinguishers, first aid kits, along with basic household necessities. This project not only provided practical support but also fostered a sense of community and belonging.Technology Integration
The New Hope 4-H program has successfully integrated technology into STEM programming, providing young people with hands-on learning experiences. Utilizing ipads, participants have programmed Sphero BOLT robots, engaging in coding activities that challenge them to navigate the robots through mazes. This innovative approach not only enhances their technical skills but also fosters critical thinking, problem solving, and teamwork.Sustaining
The New Hope 4-H program is making steady progress in sustaining this program. The program continues to hold monthly meetings at the East Grand Forks site, with a focus on increasing youth participation. Currently, there are seven young people participating which are supported by two volunteers and the 4-H staff. The 4-H Extension Educator is actively involved in supporting the volunteers and encouraging them to take on more responsibilities during the programming. This collaborative effort aims to ensure the program’s growth and sustainability.Form A - Age Group by Ethnicity and Race
