Program Implementation

In December 2023, Mind Matters programming was underway at Bloom Vernon Elementary School. A total of 62 6th grade students participated in the skills-based program during the 2023-2024 school year. Students participated in the program and also received resiliency kits to take home over the holiday break to reinforce the lessons and skills learned during Mind Matters. The resiliency kits included things like journals and coloring materials to support healthy coping strategies while not at school. Students completed the programming, but the school continued the resiliency campaign school-wide with banners and various themes promoted through the rest of the school year to help remind students that they have positive supports and a trusting community to uplift them. The campaign has been very successful in including staff, guidance counselors, and administrators at schools to reinforce positive messaging. In September 2024, a new cohort of 47 6th graders participated in Mind Matters for the 2024-2025 school year. The programming for that group continued through November 2024 and the results will be reported on the CYFAR year 3 annual report.

Community Integration

Engagement with the school has been instrumental in developing and expanding this program. The school serves as a connection point in the rural community for so many activities including afterschool programming, sports, community events, and hosting the parenting program delivered by OSU Extension. The school is a central meeting place and well known by families of the community. Strengthening the school relationship has enhanced OSU Extension’s relationship with families and caregivers of students attending Bloom Vernon Elementary School and the surrounding community.

Technology Integration

Through this program, the 4-H SPIN club integrates iPads into STEM lessons and activities during the afterschool program component of the parenting education, which occurred during year 1 reporting and will occur again in year 3 reporting. Additionally, the students use iPads to complete all program related surveys, making data collection less burdensome and streamlined. The team plans to purchase mobile units for the iPad stations to be taken from school to school for various programming during school and after school.

Sustaining

Sustainability is directly connected to our community relationship development and enhancement through this project. Increased engagement and communication with the school continues to lead to more interest in the programs and buy-in from school staff to continue offering the program. The buy-in is a direct result of the staff seeing the impacts of Mind Matters programming and how effective it is at get students to talk through emotions and issues with the guidance counselor and practice skills learned in the class outside of the classroom setting. Our team has already received another grant to support expansion efforts into other schools in Scioto County and surrounding counties which will only further support the program’s long-term success and sustainability.
