Program Implementation
Roger Parks Garden Club had 68 Students ranging from kindergarten to 5th grade. Students met once a week during the 2004 spring session and then resumed in the fall of 2024. Subjects covered are as such: Plant parts, flower dissection, planting seed potatoes, garden prep for the season and putting a garden to bed for the winter; plant identification around school yard, lasagna gardening, worm bin set up and management, hydroponic system to grow lettuce, spinach and some flowers, insects, prey/predator for plants, using upcycling items to use as grow medium (toilet paper rolls and newspaper or gallon milk jugs for winter sowing)Community Integration
Seeds of Change came and did a workshop on the hydroponics tower for the 4th and 5th graders. Over the summer neighbors of Roger Park helped us keep the garden watered and weeded. Anchor Garden provided a volunteer to help with teaching the weekly lessons and she was very helpful. Schwing, from Anchorage Soil and Water, also assisted Rodgers Park Elementary School in assembling a hydroponics system and advising on a rain catch irrigation system.Technology Integration
A hydroponic system was installed and implemented into the garden room. Youth were taught how to manage the hydroponic technology system. We also have meetings and trainings that are done by zoom.Sustaining
Kids Gardening.com offers several small grants that could be applied for to help fund the garden club over the years. The funds would go to garden supplies, (seeds, soil, container, soil amendments and possible workshops.) This grant is helping sites to provide up front big ticket items like greenhouses and hydroponic systems. Once these items are purchased it will be buying soil, seeds, etc. to keep the program going. This can be done through small grants or fundraising. The other part is working with the site coordinators and building relationships with them so that they feel a part of the program and want to keep it going. Turning these sites into 4-H clubs will also help them to feel supported in the future.Form A - Age Group by Ethnicity and Race
